Qualities a therapist in the Beauty industry need include good interpersonal skills, stamina (they may be on their feet all day), artistic flair – particularly if the job includes make-up and nail art, and commercial awareness, since they are often required to sell products to clients in order to earn a commission.
Training is usually a full or part time course at college to gain an NVQ, but there is also a need for on the job training since products and techniques are constantly changing and it’s essential to stay up to date with these.
Prospects are good with one career path being into management, lecturing, working as a rep for a beauty product manufacturer or specialising in an area such as make up to become a make-up artist. Some may move into providing complimentary therapies such as Indian Head massage, stress management,reflexology, Reiki and aromatherapy.
Starting salaries for beauty therapists is around the £9000 per eyelashes with private label mark when first qualified. After a few years experience this generally rises to £13000 or more and a move to senior level or management will see a pay rise to £20,000.
The hours of work are 37-40 and will include weekends and bank eyelashes with private label . Many beauty therapists work part-time however and there is the possibility of flexibility in the hours of work, with some preferring to work in the evenings.
